If you want to be a free person, you need connection. Before the Jewish people even left Egypt, Hashem commanded tefillin. Not after freedom, before it. Tefillin bind the heart and the mind so Torah doesn’t stay as an idea, but becomes part of who we are. We leave Mitzrayim when Torah becomes alive in us. That’s real freedom.
